The Ontario Provincial Police are launching Operation Impact to crack down on dangerous driving over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Acting Sgt. Brendan Mullen said the campaign is aimed at saving lives and keeping roadways safe.

"Impaired driving, aggressive driving which includes speeding, unsafe lane changes, following too close type of offences," he said. "Now the distracted driving in Ontario has added the fourth which is the cellphone use."

Some drivers said it's that last one that worries them the most.

"I think that anybody who texts and drives is out of their mind," said Rosemarie Atwill. "They're putting not only themselves in danger but everybody else."

OPP officers will be conducting an extensive patrol of Ontario's highways from Friday until Monday.

During last year's Thanksgiving weekend, more than 11, 000 charges were laid against drivers.

Police will also be using social media like Twitter and Facebook to update the public on the campaign.

Operation Impact will coincide with the OPP's fall seatbelt campaign, which runs until Oct. 17.
