Ontario Provincial Police are warning residents and tourists in Prince Edward County to be on the lookout for a sexual assault suspect who allegedly attacked a teenaged girl while she was sun tanning at Sandbanks Provincial Park.

Police say the man was carrying a weapon when he approached the young girl and sexually assaulted her on Sunday.

Provincial police issued a public safety warning on Monday asking people in the area to be vigilant of their personal safety.

The suspect is described as a white male who is about 45 years old. He has brown hair that is shaved on the sides and is a little longer on top.

Police say the man was wearing a light-coloured jean jacket, a white muscle shirt, hiking-style work boots, white socks and sunglasses at the time of the incident.

Sandbanks Provincial Park is a popular destination on the shores of Lake Ontario, south of Belleville, that has giant sand dunes and golden beaches.

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to contact police in Prince Edward County at 613-476-2151 or 1-888-310-1122 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
