The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating two unrelated deaths this weekend in Renfrew County.

One happened early Saturday evening near Matawatchan, the other in the early morning hours on Sunday in Horton Township.

On Saturday evening, OPP and paramedics attended an address on Matawanooka Line in the Township of Greater Madawaska.

They say a 65-year-old man from Ottawa was eating at a campfire with family members, when he began choking. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At around 2 a.m. Sunday, officers, firefighters and paramedics responded to reports that two campers had fallen down an embankment in Horton Township, near the intersection of River Rd. and Thompson Rd.

Police say a 24-year-old woman was found dead at the scene down the embankment. A 20-year-old man who fell about 35 feet suffered minor injuries.

The Ontario Coroner’s Office is leading both investigations, with help from the OPP.
