OTTAWA -- Ottawa Public Health reported 55 new cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa on Friday, the same day Ontario set a new record for cases of novel coronavirus on a single day.

The 55 new cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa is the largest one-day spike in new cases since Nov. 20, when 77 new cases were reported.

One new death linked to COVID-19 in Ottawa was also announced Friday.

Since the first case of COVID-19 on March 11, there have been 8,333 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa, including 373 deaths.

Ottawa Public Health also reported Ottawa's test positivity rate was 1.3 per cent for the period of Nov. 20 to 26. 

Public Health Ontario reported 1,855 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 across Ontario on Friday. There are 517 cases in Peel Region, 494 in Toronto and 189 in York Region.

HOSPITALIZATIONS IN OTTAWA

Ottawa Public Health reported 21 people in an Ottawa hospital with COVID-19 complications on Friday. That's down from 23 new cases on Thursday.

There are currently three people in the intensive care unit.

Of the people in hospital, two people are in their 60s, seven are in their 70s, eight are in their 80s, and four are 90 or older.

ACTIVE CASES OF COVID-19 IN OTTAWA

The number of known active cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa remains below 300 for a third straight day.

Ottawa Public Health reports there are 293 active cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa, up from 259 cases on Thursday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 is the number of total laboratory-confirmed cases minus the numbers of resolved cases and deaths. A case is considered resolved 14 days after known symptom onset or positive test result. 

CASES OF COVID-19 IN OTTAWA BY AGE CATEGORY

Here is a breakdown of all known COVID-19 cases in Ottawa by age category:

  •  0-9 years old: Six new cases (560 cases total)
  •  10-19 years-old: Two new cases (956 cases total)
  •  20-29 years-old: Seven new cases (1,706 cases total)
  •  30-39 years-old: 18 new cases (1,115 cases total)
  •  40-49 years-old: Five new cases (1,055 cases total)
  •  50-59 years-old: Six new cases (974 cases total)
  •  60-69-years-old: Three new cases (649 cases total)
  •  70-79 years-old: Four new cases (428 cases total)
  •  80-89 years-old: Three new cases (525 cases total)
  • 90+ years old: One new case (365 cases total)
 

COVID-19 TESTING

The Ottawa COVID-19 Testing Taskforce reports 1,481 people were tested at COVID-19 assessment centres on Wednesday.

A total 4,764 lab tests were performed at Ottawa labs.

As of Nov. 26, 1,750 tests were still in progress.

Ottawa's COVID-19 positivity rate was 1.3 per cent for the period of Nov. 20 to 26.

COVID-19 CASES ACROSS THE REGION

There are nine new cases of COVID-19 in the Eastern Ontario Health Unit region.

Four new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Public Health.

Three new cases in Leeds, Grenville and Lennox and Addington Public Health

Renfrew County is reporting one new case of COVID-19.

Quebec reported 36 new cases of COVID-19 in the Outaouais, which includes Gatineau

 

INSTITUTIONAL OUTBREAKS 

Ottawa Public Health is reporting COVID-19 outbreaks at 28 institutions in Ottawa, including long-term care homes, retirement homes, daycares, hospitals and schools.

There are two new COVID-19 outbreaks on Friday: Medex long-term care home and New Orchard Lodge

There are two open community outbreaks involving unspecified social events.

The schools and childcare spaces currently experiencing outbreaks are:

A single laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19 in a resident or staff member of a long-term care home, retirement home or shelter triggers an outbreak response, according to Ottawa Public Health. In childcare settings, a single confirmed, symptomatic case in a staff member, home daycare provider, or child triggers an outbreak.

Under provincial guidelines, a COVID-19 outbreak in a school is defined as two or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in students and/or staff in a school with an epidemiological link, within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the school (including transportation and before or after school care).
