Ottawa Senators' assistant coach Luke Richardson spoke out Wednesday about the need for families to make sure their kids know they can be open about mental health.

Richardson's 14-year-old daughter, Daron, died by suicide last year. He says all these months later, his family is still looking for answers.

"It's one conversation that we never had and that was mental health and suicide. Our conversation began and continues to this day in the hopes that the walls that have hidden youth suicide crumble and disappear," Richardson told a crowd at a mental health announcement in Toronto.

The McGuinty government announced Wednesday that it will enhance support for about 50,000 children in Ontario who have problems with mental health.

The strategy includes putting mental health workers and nurses in schools, giving teachers more training to identify mental health issues early, and giving kids more timely access to the help they need.
