TORONTO - The province is working as fast as it can to fill those pesky winter potholes that are appearing all over Ontario highways, Transportation Minister Jim Bradley said Wednesday.

The cycle of cold and warm temperatures during a particularly harsh winter in Ontario has created more damage than usual - not only on the busy network of 400-series highways, but on roads all across the province, Bradley said.

"We've got a winter this time which is particularly challenging,'' he said.

"When you have constant freezing and melting, you tend to get more potholes. We're going to make every effort to get after them.''

But the heavy snowfall and unpredictable winter weather has also made it more difficult for repair crews to target the worst-hit areas, Bradley added: Just when the crews think they have a handle on the problem, a new pothole appears down the road.

Filling all those extra potholes is going to cost the province more this year, but Bradley said it will be worth the extra expense.

"Our crews will be out there working as quickly as possible and as extensively as possible to get them fixed because it's something that nobody, but nobody, wants to encounter.''
