A school bus driver is in hospital in critical condition after a crash involving a crane truck in North Gower.

Ottawa Police say the bus was travelling down McCordick Rd. when it collided with the truck heading westbound on Roger Stevens Dr. just before 7:30 a.m., Thursday morning.

Ottawa Fire say crews arrived to find the bus driver, a 70-year-old woman, trapped underneath the truck. A heavy rescue vehicle was used to stabilize the large rig as crews extricated her.

The woman was airlifted to the Ottawa Hospital by an ORNGE air ambulance with critical head and chest injuries. The driver of the crane truck, a 47-year-old man was transported to the Kemptville hospital with minor injuries.

A 17-year-old girl on the bus at the time of the crash was not hurt.

The intersection of Roger Stevens and McCordick was closed for several hours as part of the investigation.

The circumstances leading up to the crash are still under investigation. Police are asking witnesses to call 613-236-1222 extension 2481.
