The victim in yesterday's house fire in Orléans was a teenage girl, the Office of the Fire Marshal confirmed Saturday night.

Emergency crews were called to the group home on Old Montreal Road around 2:30 p.m. Friday. Paramedics say the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ottawa Police say arson is being looked into as a potential cause.

Jean-François André, who lives across the street, says he was told someone living at the group home started the fire.

“According to police officers, he told me that basically (someone) was trying to harm the house and that someone got trapped.”

André says several people ran out of the home as the fire spread.

“The door was completely engulfed in flames and the windows burst because of the pressure of the fire,” he added.

Paramedics say they treated a few other people at the scene but they were not taken to hospital.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Ottawa Police are investigating.
