Henry and Vera Jones are battling the City of Ottawa after a threat to mow the couple's yard in Constance Bay.

The Jones' non-traditional garden violates a city bylaw requiring homeowners to remove grass and weed.

"The pollunating insect populations in Canada and north America have been plummetting because of industrial agriculture, but also a large part is activities in cities and surrounding cities," said Henry Jones. "street lighting and laws and so on are not good for these pollinators."

The city, however, is not on board with the couple's ecological efforts. The city sent the Jones' a letter notifying them of the failure to adhere to bylaw 2005-208.

The letter said the Jones' must remove the heavy undergrowth, long grass or weeds or face being billed for the city having to do it for them.

"I'd stand in front of them, so they'd have to get past me. It would be devastating. terribly devastating," said Vera Jones.

The deadline facing the couple is Wednesday, July 8.
