KINGSTON, ONT. -- Investigators are searching for the cause of a major fire that destroyed a building on Bath Road in Kingston.

"The flames, they were just out of control. It was so crazy. The sky was completely dark," said witness Amanda Dyson.

The fire broke out just after 10 p.m. Tuesday within a two-storey commercial building near Westdale Avenue, which was fully engulfed when crews arrived.

Damage was contained to the main structure.

"We just kind of saw just so much smoke it was just kind of billowing from the one end of the building," said Dyson.

"Ten to 12, it started smelling like this awful burning smell, just this horrible 'Everything is caught on fire' smell."

A video shared online shows flames shooting out of the building as crews worked late Tuesday night.

The fire department said on Wednesday morning that no one was hurt in the blaze and the building was abandoned at the time. The cause of fire remains under investigation and the total cost of the damage is not yet known.

"We don't know what the contents were inside, so having a fuel load inside will obviously increase the size," said Ted Posadowski of Kingston Fire about the size of the fire.

The building has been vacant since October.
