Childhood obesity faced a high-profile group of opponents in west Ottawa Saturday, as former and current NHLers participated in a grueling fundraiser for fitness.

The site was Greco Lean and Fit in Kanata, where circuit training was held for a larger-than-expected crowd of young and old alike.

Gym owner Tony Greco said parents can set an active example for their children.

"We're meant to move," he said. "We've got to get active and whatever way we can do that is really important."

One example of this dedication to fitness paying off is defenceman Dan Boyle of the San Jose Sharks, who appears on the cover of Greco's new book.

Boyle said at the fundraiser that he was told to give up his hockey dreams many times, but he refused to quit.

"I fought hard to get where I am today and I was counted out many times when I was younger," he said.

Now, Boyle is an assistant captain for the Sharks and counts an Olympic gold medal and Stanley Cup among his accomplishments.

Also participating was former defenceman and current Ottawa Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson.
