The whole country was watching Samantha Kigutaq-Metcalfe and Cailyn Degrandpre perform at the cabinet swearing-in ceremony Wednesday morning.
But for the two 11-year old throat singers from Ottawa, it was just another performance.
“Not really nervous because we always do performances, but I was kind of nervous because it was Justin Trudeau and he is the new Prime Minister,” says Samantha Kigutaq-Metcalfe.
When the girls broke into giggles, all of Canada smiled back- including Governor- General David Johnston and the new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Kigutaq-Metcalfe says, “(My) dad showed me that at the end that Justin Trudeau was mouthing ‘thank you’ that was great- and I was proud of that.”
Cailyn Degrandpre says she likes to share her Inuit culture with everyone, “We like to throat singing a lot and we want to show people our culture and the throatsinging.”
The girls explain the giggles are part of the performance. In traditional throat singing, partners face each other, and the first one to laugh, losses the round. Watching the girls sing makes father Dion Metcalfe proud. “They were up there, they were the consummate of professionalism and the giggling is part of the game, the one who giggles first loses the game.”
He says the girls practised together for four hours a week, and practise at home in front of the mirror. Metcalfe says reaction to the girls’ performance has been positive for the Inuit community. “The two girls have no idea what type of impact they have had,” he says. “I received a message today that somebody's child today, wore their seal skin headband to school today because they saw Samantha and Cailyn singing on TV last night.”
Another proud people watching- Samantha and Cailyn’s teacher Lynda Brown from the Ottawa Inuit Children’s Centre. “I was so excited for them,”
“They were just like, yeah, it's an everyday thing for them.” She says, “Growing up and not being proud of my culture, and seeing these two girls be so proud of their culture is such a huge thing for me, and I just couldn't stop smiling.”.
The girls have become so popular on social media they have even earned their own hashtag- #giggles.
But the girls says they do plan on going to another swearing-in ceremony, but next time, as future cabinet ministers.
