A man was rushed to hospital in critical condition after a house fire on Albert St. Sunday morning.

Fire crews were called to the three story unit at 832 Albert St. just after 10 a.m. Sunday.

Inside they found a man, believe to be in his 50s, in cardiac arrest. Fire officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived on scene and started aggressive life support treatment.

“We were working on him outside, performing some first aid and CPR, he’s now been transferred via the paramedics to the hospital,” said district chief

The man suffered smoke inhalation and was covered in second and third degree burns.

A woman who lives two doors down said she made the 9-1-1 call after smoke started seeping into her own apartment.

She said she rushed outside and started banging on her neighbours door, kicking it and shouting for him, but he did not respond.

Another neighbour, Genevieve Parsonage said this is the second fire at the home this year.

“He was fine. The unit was damaged but he had suffered smoke inhalation and what have you but he unfortunately refused to go to the hospital… and now we’re six months later and unfortunately the outcome in just a little sadder this time,” said Parsonage.

Neighbour say the man had struggled in the past, but had recently turned his life around.

“He was doing really good,” said Darlene Sheldrick. “He’s a really nice guy and he lives alone and we all care about him here – help him out and what not.”

Ottawa Police and Ontario Fire Marshall are investigating the incident.

One firefighter also suffered a minor injury to his hand.
