Carleton University flags will be lowered to half-staff on Monday after one of their students was killed while cycling on Thursday.
Ottawa police said the crash happened on Bronson Avenue south of Holmwood Avenue Thursday night around 7:45 p.m.
They said the woman was riding northbound in a bike lane on the southbound side of the street when she was struck.
"I saw there was blood on the road by the sidewalk," said Megan Coxworth, who was on a nearby bus at the time. "Then I saw the car windshield, which was just destroyed."
When emergency crews arrived, the woman was already being treated by an off-duty paramedic. She suiffered life-threatening multi-system trauma and was taken to the Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus, where she later died.
A news release from Carleton identified the victim as 27-year-old Krista Johnson, a graduate student doing her masters degree in social work.
The School of Social Work will be holding a memorial on Monday at 8:30 in 2017 Dunton Tower. The school said her funeral will be held next week in her hometown of Pembroke.
This crash is the fourth fatal collision involving a cyclist in Ottawa this year.
"My general feeling is that as a bicyclist in Ottawa, you live quite dangerously," said Carleton professor Bernard Leistle.
"What I do, I use bike lanes but then I use the sidewalk to go into Carleton University."
"I try to avoid Bronson, too fast for my liking," said Carleton student Megan Haley. "I try to stay on the canal or on sidewalks that aren't being used by pedestrians."
