Ottawa Police say a 27-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot in the Byward Market overnight.

Police were called to the corner of George Street and William Street at 3:20 Sunday morning.

"We found a male in his mid 20s that had some gun shot wounds, at that point transported to the trauma centre of the Civic Hospital," says Duty Inspector John Medeiros.

Medeiros says the victim was known to police, and is expected to survive.

Police insist there is not threat to public safety.

The incident sets a new record for shootings in a single year in Ottawa. It was tied with 2014 at 49 last week with the shooting of Abdi Jama.

"We have had a large number of incidents that have occured this year, and it's unfortunately and it concerns us all as a community," says Medeiros.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Ottawa Police Guns and Gangs unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5050. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
