On the first day of school, some students at Carleton Place high school are registered for classes they didn't need and spares they shouldn't have. Some don't even have timetables at all.
The Upper Canada District School board implemented a new software system - but the bigger problem - far more students enrolled than anyone predicted. Carleton Place high school Principal Eric Hardie says initial enrolment trends indicated they would get 518 students for all grades 7 thru 12 but the school year has started with close to 600 students. That, coupled with a new software system, has prompted some timetable problems that guidance counsellors are scrambling to fix.
Hardie says media publicity about some of the schools successful programs have helped boost enrolment beyond expectations.
