Sunday marked a warm welcome home for Teddy, a five-year-old chocolate Labrador, who is still recovering after he apparently swallowed rat poison along a National Capital Commission trail.

His owners were walking at the Green's Creek Conservation Area in east Ottawa when Teddy began frothing and was paralyzed in the back half of his body.

They cut short the walk and started walking back to the truck, and by the time he reached the truck, Teddy had collapsed.

After a trip to the vet and emergency treatment, Teddy is OK -- home two days early.

'It's just really, really sad'

At another NCC trail in south Ottawa, there was more concern after a sign was posted saying a dog died from rat poisoning.

"It's just really, really sad that this is happening in the community," Ashley Bencke told CTV Ottawa on Sunday.

If you think your dog has swallowed rat poisoning, signs like heavy breathing and blood in urine are good indicators, and there is medication available to act as an antidote before symptoms develop.

Ottawa police are investigating the incident, and the family says they have been very co-operative.

Meanwhile, the NCC says reports of rat poisoning on their trails are disturbing, and they're telling dog owners to remain cautious.
