A 23-year-old man was taken to hospital in Ottawa Friday night after being injured during a demolition derby east of the city.

He was rear-ended at about 30 km/h on his passenger side while participating in the derby as part of the Navan Fair around 8:30 p.m., according to Ottawa paramedics.

They said he was extricated with the help of Ottawa Fire Services and treated for neck and lower back pain, numbness in both his legs and pain in his left elbow.

He was wearing a full face helmet.

The fair's website says drivers must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver's license, and supply their own vehicle for the derby.
