The mother of a young man who was murdered while riding an OC Transpo bus more than two years ago, is now calling for a coroner's inquest into her son's death.

Michael Oatway, 23, was stabbed to death after getting into a scuffle with a group of teens after he refused to hand over his girlfriend's iPod on Sept. 21, 2006.

Shawn McKenzie, who is now 19, was sentenced to 10 years in prison without parole last week. The judge chose to give him an adult sentence, even though he was 17 at the time of the murder and was tried as a youth.

Now, Cathy Knapman says she fears someone else will get killed while taking OC Transpo.

Since Oatway's death, OC Transpo put in place a special constable program designed to reduce crime on public transit.

Special constables have some police powers and have the authority to make arrests, issue tickets and run security checks. They carry handcuffs, batons, pepper spray and badges.
