A manhunt is underway for a convicted murderer who escaped Saturday morning from the Frontenac Institution in Kingston, Ont.
Andrew Wood, 42, is serving a life sentence for second-degree murder. Corrections officials are investigating how he left the minimum-security prison on Bath Road between 7:30 and 11:30 a.m.
Wood is a white male with short dark hair and a lean build. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call their nearest police department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
The Frontenac Institution opened in 1972 and can hold up to 193 inmates in three housing units.
Nearly 30 per cent are serving life sentences. But those sent to Frontenac are considered a low risk to public safety, said Holly Knowles, a spokeswoman for Correctional Services Canada.
A perimeter is defined around the facility but not directly controlled by guards, Knowles told ctvottawa.ca.
"We're still working very closely with police to try and locate the offender," she added.
Wood began serving his sentence on March 19, 1990. Knowles could not confirm how much of that time had been spent at the Frontenac Institution.
