An Ottawa MP is proposing a change to the lyrics of Canada’s national anthem.
Ottawa-Vanier Liberal MP Mauril Belanger has introduced a private member’s bill to make the change.
“The bill proposes a simple change in the English version only,” he said in the House of Commons on Monday. “I hope that the exchanges and debate will be respectful, and beyond partisanship,” he added.
The proposed change is over two words.
Belanger wants the lyrics “True patriot love in all thy sons command,” to become “true patriot love, in all of us command.”
He says the alternation would make the anthem more gender-inclusive.
This is not the first time changes to those lyrics have been suggested.
In 2010, the Conservative government raised the idea of changing the same words, but quickly scrapped the proposal after a public outcry from Canadians opposing the change.
