A funeral was held Wednesday for a nine-year-old boy who drowned in the Rideau River last week.

Family and friends paid tribute to Olisadike "Oli" Okoye's short life Wednesday morning at St. Joseph's Cathedral on Wilbrod Street, near his home.

Oli fell through the ice on the Rideau River while he was playing with his friend near Strathcona Park just days before Christmas.

Emergency workers pulled Oli out of the frigid water about a kilometre downstream. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Oli was described as a curious and fun-loving boy who loved to be outside.

His death prompted warnings for people of all ages to stay off river ice, especially near open water.
