A 50-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries after his motorcycle struck a deer on Highway 417 near Terry Fox Drive in Ottawa's west end.

Paramedics say the motorcycle was travelling at highway-speed when it struck the deer just before 7:30 p.m. Monday. The driver was thrown about 75 to 100 feet.

The man suffered injuries to his head, chest, neck, back and lower leg.

He was transported to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

It's the second serious motorcycle crash involving a deer in less than one week.

A 36-year-old North Glengarry man was killed last Thursday night when his motorcycle struck a deer on County Road 24 in North Glengarry Township, east of Ottawa.

The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
