A moose that wandered into an east-end neighbourhood on Monday died after collapsing on a driveway and being immobile for four hours.

Police say it was spotted in the Fallinbrook area around noon.

Shortly after, it made its way to Chenier Way and collapsed beside the garage of Colette and Andre Lessard.

The couple had been away for the long weekend and when they came home they were surprised to see police cars, a crowd, and a dead moose covered with a blue tarp.

"As we moved up to the street we saw police cars and as we got closer and closer we noticed that it was our place, so it's not a very nice way to come back home," said Colette Lessard.

Not the first time

In June, another moose had to be shot and killed a couple streets over. At the time, there was no protocol in place to deal with wildlife in residential areas.

Now, the city has a contract with wildlife experts to assist in situations like these ones.

City officials say tranquilizer darts were not used on this animal because it showed no erratic behaviour after it was spotted.

Area residents say it looked exhausted.

"When it laid down it looked like it was starting to pant and then it put its head down on its side … seemed like hyperventilating." said Steven McFaull.

The moose was taken away in a City of Ottawa truck.
