Mold shuts down swimming pool at downtown YMCA-YWCA
The YMCA-YWCA in downtown Ottawa has closed its swimming pool for a month after mold developed in the newly renovated facility because the ceiling was painted with the wrong kind of paint.
"It has a big impact on our operation, shutting the pool for a four-week period," said Tosha Rhodenizwer, a spokesperson for the YMCA-YWCA.
The YMCA-YWCA on Argyle Avenue is currently undergoing $15 million in renovations, which includes revamping the swimming pool.
The pool was closed for three months last year while renovations were underway, but the paint used on the ceiling is now creating problems with mold. The Y says there's no danger as long as the mold isn't touched.
Now, specialists are coming in to remove the mold and re-paint the ceiling.
The cost to fix the problem is estimated at $68,000, the bulk of which is to pay for the use of scaffolding.
The Y says the pool problem won't push back the deadline to complete renovations at the facility by the fall and it won't boost the overall cost.
However, it's still undetermined who will pay to fix the mold in the swimming pool.
