CORNWALL, Ont. - Two Akwesasne Mohawk police officers have been charged in a crash that killed three people on Cornwall Island in November.

Const. Mike Biron is facing one count of criminal negligence causing death and one count of dangerous driving causing death.

Sgt. Kenneth Chaussi is also charged with criminal negligence causing death.

An elderly couple from Massena, N.Y., was killed when a van driven by a suspected contraband smuggler slammed into their car near the Canada Customs checkpoint on the island.

The van's driver, a 21-year-old man from Quebec, also died.

The charges come after Akwesasne Mohawk Police had asked provincial police to conduct an independent investigation.

Police had previously said the officers were pursuing the van before it ran a stop sign and slammed into the elderly couple's car.

Witnesses said it appeared the chase was called off before the deadly crash.

Both officers will appear in a Cornwall court on March 17.
