The Ottawa River Canoe Club is back in the water Wednesday with a Canada Day Regatta after three thefts in six weeks jeopardized the event.

Three outboard engines, eight kayaks, and 12 carbon fiber paddles were stolen from the 150-member club near Dunrobin, with a total value exceeding $20,000.

Parents and friends worked to make calls, borrow paddles, and dig through garages for equipment so the kids could race.

"I'm really sad for the kids and families, but I do have to say they're very resilient," said L.A. Schmidt, the club's coaching director.

"I told them no matter what happens, you've got to paddle for the race day, go out, and do your best."

The most recent burglary occurred overnight Sunday.

"If we do get hit again, we just don't know if we can stay afloat," Schmidt said.
