Shoppers in Ottawa’s Westboro neighbourhood say they’re excited for the launch of their long-awaited farmer’s market this month.

The Westboro market will run every Saturday from Aug. 18 to Oct. 27 at Byron Linear Park.

Some of its shoppers-to-be said there’s something special about shopping in a local market with more than 75 vendors.

"You feel like you have travelled back in time to Europe,” said Christina Premachuk.

“It's very much an experience, getting food that's been grown in Ottawa and the area and kind of going back to your roots in that sense."

"They are expecting anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 people to frequent this market on a Saturday, which is an excellent number to have down here," said area councillor Katherine Hobbs.

There are more than a dozen farmer’s markets in the Ottawa region, including one on nearby Parkdale Avenue.

Vendors there said they’re not worried about losing business, instead happy that demand for local goods is high.

"We've had customers here for 59 years, they keep coming back,” said Guy Villemiru. “Family after family after family."

Farmer’s Markets Ontario said every dollar that’s spent at a market means two come back into the local economy.
