An Ottawa Tory MPP is criticizing Premier Dalton McGuinty for reducing the number of Ottawa representatives in his cabinet.
Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod says the move is a blow to the City of Ottawa, leaving only one minister to represent the nation's capital at the provincial legislature.
"They need a strong voice that's going to stand up for Ottawa residents and not just say 'yes sir; two bags full sir,' every time Mr. McGuinty decides he's going to ram something through the legislature," MacLeod said.
"We do not have a strong voice there and it's unfortunate that yet again Ottawa was left out in the cold."
The cabinet shuffle leaves Ottawa-Vanier MPP Madeleine Meilleur as the only minister representing the national capital region at the cabinet table. She keeps her position as Minister of Community and Social Services. The premier is also from Ottawa.
The cabinet shuffle follows the resignation of two prominent ministers, including Ottawa West-Nepean MPP Jim Watson, who is leaving provincial politics to run for mayor of Ottawa.
Watson stepped down from his post as minister of municipal affairs and housing last week when he announced his intentions to return to municipal politics.
His departure follows the resignation of former deputy premier George Smitherman, who is also seeking a return to municipal politics, entering the race for mayor in Toronto.
Elsewhere in the region, Prince Edward-Hastings MPP Leona Dombrowsky moves into the education portfolio. Her riding stretches from Prince Edward County to Hastings Highlands, including the City of Belleville.
