Three people were treated by paramedics after they were exposed to a chemical substance that was spilled at a government building in Ottawa's west end.

Ottawa's hazardous materials team was called to 3701 Carling Ave., near Rifle Road in the Shirley's Bay area, just after noon on Friday.

Firefighters say the chemical appears to be a cleaning solution.

Paramedics treated a 56-year-old female for skin irritation. A 53-year-old woman, who inhaled the chemical, suffered shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting.

Paramedics say a 61-year-old male who inhaled some of the substance also complained of shortness of breath.

Firefighters say the spill has been contained to one room. Fifteen people were evacuated.
