Residents in the suburb of Stittsville may notice a strong smell of chlorine when they open their water taps late this afternoon and early this evening.

City of Ottawa crews working on a water main flushed the water system clean with more chlorine than expected Wednesday.

The city says it's standard practice to use chlorine to clean the water system and there is no risk to the public.

Although the water is considered safe to drink, residents are asked to flush their taps for three to five minutes if the small of chlorine is obvious.

Areas affected are west of Huntmar Drive, south of Highway 417 and north of Fallowfield Road.

The city says there should be no evidence of chlorine in the water by later tonight.
