Freezing rain could be on the way in Ottawa this week.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for possible freezing rain Wednesday afternoon.

"Precipitation is expected to begin Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures will be close to the freezing mark and as a result, there is the potential for freezing rain. This risk is greatest near the Quebec border. Temperatures will warm through the afternoon and early evening, bringing an end to the freezing rain risk," the special weather statement says. "Freezing rain warnings may be issued as this event draws nearer."

The risk of freezing rain will end early that evening as temperatures rise. There could be some snow early in the afternoon ahead of the freezing rain.

On Thursday, expect above seasonal temperatures with a high of 13 C and showers throughout the day.

Correction:

An earlier version of this article said freezing rain was possible Tuesday afternoon. In fact, the special weather statement calls for freezing rain Wednesday afternoon.
