Four university students are crediting the smoke detector with saving their lives after an early morning fire at a Meadowlands Drive apartment block.

Ottawa firefighters were called to the small apartment building at 1218 Meadowlands Dr. at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday.  Firefighters contained the blaze to the kitchen of an apartment on the sixth floor.

Residents were briefly evacuated until firefighters had the fire under control just after midnight.

Firefighters say the fire was caused by a pot left unattended on the stove. The four occupants were woken up by the smoke alarm.

Damage is estimated at about $85,000. The apartment sustained about $10,000 damage, and the building sustained about $75,000 damage.
