A second driver has died after a head-on collision on Highway 17, northwest of Renfrew. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Ontario Provincial Police initially responded to a report of a possible drunk driver in the Cobden-area Thursday afternoon.

While officers were searching for the suspect, they came across a head-on collision on Highway 17, east of Cheneaux Road in Horton Township.

Police say their investigation revealed the suspected drunk driver was travelling east in an SUV when it struck an American couple travelling westbound in their pick-up truck.

Walter Spicer, 69, of Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 68-year-old wife, Mary, suffered critical injuries. She was rushed to hospital in Renfrew and transferred to the Ottawa Hospital's Civic Campus.

The 38-year-old male driver of the SUV was critically injured as well.

Frank Hendrickson, of Horton Township, was transferred to hospital in Renfrew and then airlifted to the Ottawa Hospital where he died of his injuries.

Although investigators are continuing to investigate, no charges will be laid.
