An Arnprior steel company experiencing a worker's strike said the union is spreading misleading information on the bargaining process.

Sandvik Materials Technology Canada's 157 workers went on strike at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

Workers said wages and changes to their pensions are the reasons for the labour dispute, but the company issued a news release Thursday which said a proposal that would affect early retirement was withdrawn.

The company said it decided to instead reduce the rates that employees' cost of living allowance would increase.

"No proposal was ever put forth which would have affected the normal retirement benefits of the employees," said the release.

The company said the union didn't present its final offer to its workers and "information regarding both the nature of the company's initial proposals and the content of the final proposal has been incorrectly presented to the union membership and the public."
