The thunderous roar of more than 1,700 motorcycles, speed bikes, and even scooters ripped through Ottawa and the Valley on Saturday during the Ride For Dad to raise awareness for prostate cancer.

The 10th annual event raised about $360,000. One in seven men will be affected by prostate cancer in their lifetime - most over the age of 40. An estimated 80 per cent of cases go undetected.

"If they catch it early enough there's a 90-per-cent success rate," said Andy Church, Ride For Dad's Ottawa co-chair. "And if you can beat cancer today, that's wonderful."

Bob Kikkert, who rode in from Cornwall and beat prostate cancer six years ago, said such rides are also important for raising money for research.

Similar rides were held Saturday in communities across Canada.
