Six people are displaced after a fire which started in a downtown restaurant moved up into their apartment Thursday night.

Ottawa fire crews said calls started coming about smoke at Famous Frenchy’s restaurant at 506 Rideau Street just before 11 p.m.

After they forced their way inside, fire officials said they originally thought a grill had been left on but the fire actually started in the basement.

Six people were forced from their second-floor apartment above the restaurant, with an estimated $75,000 damage to the building and $35,000 damage to its contents.
