If Friday's public meeting is any indication, many west Ottawa residents remain apprehensive over plans to turn the former Laurentian High School into a shopping complex anchored by Wal-Mart

Smart Centre wants to turn the vacant Nepean property at Baseline Road and Clyde Avenue into a big-box location supported by some street peripheral buildings, according to Coun. Rick Chiarelli.

"Obviously this is going to cause a lot of concern in the community," Chiarelli said.

Friday's meeting outlined the development plan - if approved by the city.

Many residents are concerned about traffic flow onto Clyde Avenue, while others have health worries.

"I was concerned about the asbestos that apparently is in (the school), and I wanted to know what their specific plans were for removal," said Jennifer Southward.
