Not much is known about what police are calling Sunday a "sudden death" in a home west of Ottawa.

Police are releasing few details on the incident in Arnprior, but unconfirmed reports said the 41-year-old man may have been killed in an act of self-defence after a random break-in at a family home.

The home on Edward Street was cordoned off by police tape all afternoon, where neighbours said a married couple lives with their teenaged kids.

"(A) nice couple, salt of the earth people, good neighbours," said Greg Wright. "Oh yeah, kind of a shock."

Neighbours said they believe all the family members are safe.

Police did say the cause of death hadn't been determined yet, with an autopsy coming Monday in Ottawa.

"At that time we certainly hope to be able to identity the deceased male party," said Const. Peter Leon. "In the meantime we are in the process of attempting to do next of kin notifications."

Police said it's too early to say if charges will be laid.
