Quebec provincial police say charges are unlikely in a two-bus crash that seriously injured a tour bus driver who was taking a group of Ottawa high school students to a west Quebec ski hill.

The driver broke his leg and suffered cuts to his face when his bus rammed into another bus on Highway 5, near Highway 50, in Gatineau on Thursday.

Police say it appears the driver of the first bus suddenly hit the breaks, causing the second bus to slam into it from behind. Police say the glare from the sun also appears to be a factor in the crash.

The windshield of the second bus had to be removed to free the bus driver and passengers.

The buses were taking about 80 students from Grades 7 to 12 from Lester B. Pearson High School in Gloucester to Mont Cascades ski hill in Quebec.

The bus driver was seriously injured. A teacher and three students were also treated for minor injuries.

The collision slowed traffic heading into Gatineau for several hours. Police are continuing to investigate.
