Ottawa police laid more than 500 charges over the weekend for various offences during Project Rowdy, a police operation that saw officers target the Byward Market, Lowertown, Sandy Hill, Vanier and Centretown.

The charges ranged from public intoxication to noise violations, aggressive driving, unsafe cycling and others.

Some charges were also laid in relation to drug possession.

Police say summer weather causes an increase in vehicle and pedestrian traffic to downtown areas, which ends up leading to more calls to police for disturbances, public intoxication, drug use, aggressive driving and property damage.

Project Rowdy aimed to crack down on those complaints, promoting the safe and lawful enjoyment of downtown Ottawa.
