Ottawa taxi drivers say they need to introduce new safety measures to protect themselves while on the job.

Drivers met Monday night to discuss safety issues, following a series of beatings and other incidents targeting Ottawa taxi drivers.

The drivers say they plan to meet with Ottawa city council to recommend new safety measures, including being allowed to demand a deposit from passengers before driving them to their destinations.

Drivers also say they want to have the option to either spend money on a surveillance camera, or invest in a protective shield. They say they want the option because many drivers can't afford both.

The demands come after a taxi driver was badly beaten near Elgin Street and Gladstone Avenue at about 1 a.m. on July 17. The driver suffered serious head injuries in the attack.
