Ottawa Police Chief Vern White says the force is stepping up its efforts to help crack down on street crime.

White says four new beat officers will soon be added to patrols in the city's downtown core.

He made the comment during a meeting with Vanier business owners Wednesday.

White says the Ottawa neighbourhood is one that needs to be rejuvenated.

Vanier business owners agree and are lobbying for a more visible police presence in the area.

White, however, says police are an active force in the neighbourhood and crime levels in the area are dropping.

He says a deployment review of the Ottawa police is currently underway.
