Ottawa Police have identified the victim in the city's seventh homicide of the year as 41-year-old Dady Jean of Vanier.

Police were called to the 300 block of Lacasse Avenue in Vanier around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Jean was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.

There is no word on any possible suspects.

"Right now it appears that the attackers did know the victim, so it wasn't a random thing," said Staff Sgt. Bruce Pirt with the Major Crime Unit.

Keilen Vancoughnett was walking her dog in the area when emergency responders rushed to the scene.

"I just saw a whole bunch of police officers, fire and ambulance," she said. "It was crazy. I didn't know what had happened. I just found out it was a shooting."

The shooting in Vanier is the fifth in a week. On Monday, a 16-year-old was shot twice around 3:00 p.m. in Sandy Hill. Two hours later, a man was shot in the area of Merivale and Baseline.

Then, on Wednesday, a man was found suffering from a gunshot wound on the Alexandra bridge.

Despite the recent spate of shootings and the recent fatality in Vanier, nearby residents said this latest incident will not change their daily routines.

"I'll still walk my dogs in the same area, but I'll try to be a little bit safer," said one resident.

Police are still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
