A new sensory room at the Mary Honeywell Elementary School in Barrhaven will help children living with autism in the Capital deal with their condition.

The room is intended to help autistic children lower stress and anxiety levels through exercise.

"Over the years, we as a team have noticed the very positive events that happen with sensory activities, relaxation methods and exercise," said autism lead teacher Tracy Schmidt.

She says exercise has a positive effect on the mood and behaviour of children who have autism.

The sensory room was funded by an $11,000 grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities.
