Loveys is a former economic advisor to Prime Minister Jean Chr�tien, and won a tight nomination race against Paula Du Hamel Yellow Horn on Sept. 10.

She has been a consultant and artist for the past five years, and is regarded as an environmentalist and small business owner. Loveys, 56, co-owned a consulting business, worked for Pollution Probe earlier in her career, and was a director of the Canadian Institute of Environmental Law and Policy for several years.

Loveys has a systems engineering degree from the University of Waterloo. She grew up in rural southwestern Ontario and worked in Ottawa for more than 25 years. She lives in the national capital with husband Tony.
