OTTAWA - Ryan Spooner scored a short-handed goal and added two assists Monday to lift the Kingston Frontenacs to a 7-4 victory over the Ottawa 67's in Ontario Hockey League action.
Both teams were playing less than 24 hours after their previous games as part of a school-day promotion that saw the Civic Centre packed with almost 10,000 area students.
The Frontenacs (3-13-2-1) ended a four-game winless slide with the win. Tyler J. Brown and David Mazurek scored 30 seconds apart in the final minute of the second period to put Kingston ahead to stay.
"It feels great, I think they're in first place right now and we're in last place," Spooner said. "We haven't really been blown out a lot this year, it's been games that we've lost by one or two goals ... so to get on the other side of that feels really good."
The Eastern Conference-leading 67's fell to 11-5-2-0 with their second straight loss.
Spencer Green and Kyler Nixon had a goal and an assist apiece for the Frontenacs. Trevor Morbeck and Darcy Greenaway had the other Kingston goals.
Nathan Cull chipped in with three assists and Igor Bobkov finished with 36 saves.
The 67's did all of their damage on the power play, going 4-for-5 with the man advantage. Sean Monahan had a goal and two assists while Tyler Toffoli and Shane Prince had a goal and an assist apiece.
Steven Janes had the other goal. Ottawa goaltender Karsten Pankhurst made his first OHL appearance and finished with 23 saves.
"We hung him out to dry, for sure," Toffoli said. "It was a tough game for us.
"(The atmosphere) was really exciting and the kids are so loud, it's too bad we didn't put out a good performance today."
