Cole, 44, grew up in Belleville and is a senior vice-president with Northstar Trade Finance. He was chief of staff to former International Trade Minister Jim Peterson between 2003 and 2006, working on softwood lumber, beef exports, and agricultural supply management in international negotiations.
Cole, called "Big Red," has also been a lawyer, teacher, consultant, and business manager in several countries 3- and served with the Prince Edward Hastings Regiment. He has been active within the Liberal Party since 1988 and as a volunteer fundraiser for the Canadian Special Olympics and the Canadian Cancer Society.
Cole and wife Elizabeth have one son. He has three degrees from the University of Western Ontario, including law and an M.B.A.
