The wait is over for the thousands of commuters who rely on Highway 174. The stretch of road was reopened Monday afternoon after a massive sinkhole swallowed a car on the highway last week.

City crews have been working on the section of the road between Jeanne D’Arc and Montreal Road to repair the road since the sinkhole developed during a rainstorm on September 4.

The sinkhole was caused by a failing storm pipe. It took so long to repair the collapsed road because piece of a new pipe had to be shipped from Toronto.

The emergency repair has caused an estimated $5 million and hours stuck in traffic for thousands of commuters.

One lane of Jeanne D’Arc has also been reopened. The other lane is expected to open later this week depending on the weather.
