The local health board is examining the possibility of shorter hospital stays, fewer social workers and a reduction of nurses to help Ottawa hospitals deal with tough economic times.

The board is considering cuts as it looks for ways to combat tens of millions of dollars in deficits.

Officials at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario say they are predicting a deficit of more than $2 million in 2009-2010.

CEO Michel Bilodeau told CTV Ottawa that in terms of services and support for families, "I think most people will not notice a difference, but some may."

According to the law, Ontario hospitals must balance their books every year.
